Baby Talk

Youth volunteers are needed to support Story Time Hour productions at local venues. Volunteers read stories, dress up as characters in the books to interact with children, and help organize event with Baby Talk staff. Contact: Laura Guffin at 287-0511 ext. 5832

JET Afterschool Program

The JET Afterschool Program ,  is a new adventure for middle school boys and girls.  The Jasper Explorer Team (JET) will go on day trips to, originally, places around Walker County .  Youth volunteers needed to assist the Staff Counselors on these trips. Contact Stacy Banks at 384-9617.

DIVE-IN MOVIE

The Memorial Park Natatorium with WAY Council funds will host a DIVE-IN MOVIE for teens.  This event will offer teens a fun activity for the night and will be used to promote community service opportunities for youth.  The WAY Council and will partner with the Nat to put this event on and will be involved in every aspect of planning, registration and networking. We would love to have youth volunteers to help create and staff this fun night. Contact: Jennifer Smith at 275-3626.

The Walker County Arts Alliance hosts Art in the Park (AIP) each year at the Memorial Park Natatorium. Youth volunteers needed to aid children in art projects. Contact: Beth Sargent at 221-1711

Walker County Literacy Council

The Walker County Literacy Council's "Reading Rocks" program features "celebrity readers" from Walker County reading their favorite book from their childhood or connected to their celebrity status.  Youth volunteers will create bulletin boards in local elementary schools publicizing the events, be celebrity readers and hand out books to children. SPECIAL OLYMPICS
Want to be a coach or a buddy?  Volunteer with the Special Olympics at the Memorial Park Natatorium.  They practice from 3 -4 on Mondays and Wednesdays, and go to swim meets once a month.  This is a great opportunity for you and a friend to do together!  Must be 13 years old to volunteer and you will be trained.  You do not have to be a great swimmer to participate, nor do you have to go to every practice and swim meet!  Volunteers also needed for the Regional Swim Meet party the night before and the day of the swim meet. Walker County Humane Society

Volunteers 13 or older:
Volunteers needed for general cleaning, feeding and watering animals,

Volunteers 16 & older
Hosing and deodorizing kennels, mowing and weed-eating
around the center

Volunteers of any age - Pet Therapy:
Go with us to take animals to visit nursing homes We need help in building a web site, if this is your expertise, please let us know!

American Red Cross Walker Chapter

High school students are needed to be Community Education Instructors. Instructors teach elementary children about staying safe.  Courses being taught include:

    • A Firey-Tale (fire)
      Whales Tales (water safety)
      Together-we-Prepare (disaster education)
      Home Alone and Happy Hearts (health and fitness)

We need individuals to collect items for the shelter.  Unfortunately, we do not use volunteers in direct client services or to answer the crisis line, but maintains a list of supplies needed to improve the quality of life in our shelter.  If you would like to organize a drive at your school, please contact Jan at 387-1157.
